In February, 2010, Bapak Waleed continued his tour of the States, visiting Yale University after having completed a Lecture and Presentation on Silat Traditional, Natural Healing, and Wellness at Harvard University. His students at Yale happily welcomed him back, eager to continue learning from him the steps and manners of Silat Tuo, the traditional arts and movement system of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Bapak, always giving of his time, shared with the students from some of the oldest systems in Silat, including Silat Tuo, Silat Minang and Silat Harimau. During the session he also touched upon some applications of the movements for the purposes of self defense. As always, the focus in movement was on maintaining one's breathing and moving based on sensitivity and awareness rather than rote techniques.
Bapak's presentation also included a slideshow and videos of the devestation in Padang, West Sumatra, that happened as a result of the earthquake in October 2009. He encouraged everyone to continue their efforts in aiding the reconstruction and relief, as many people in West Sumatra are still in dire need of shelter and other basic necessities. Bapak's commentary came from the heart, and touched the listeners, as he was there in Padang before, during, and after the earthquake and was himself very grateful to have come through the experience safely.
